Chennai, May 10, 2026: In a historic moment for Tamil Nadu politics, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay (Thalapathy Vijay) was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ended decades of Dravidian party dominance by emerging as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is one of the biggest stars of Tamil cinema, who has dominated Kollywood for the past 30 years. After making his debut as a child star in the 1984 film ‘Vetri’, he made his debut as a hero in his father S.A. Chandrasekhar’s ‘Naalaiya Theerup’ in 1992. In his career spanning over three decades, he has acted in 68 films as the hero, making him the highest-paid actor in Tamil cinema. His 69th film ‘Jana Nayagan’ is yet to be released.
Vijay took oath alongside nine TVK ministers, forming a compact initial cabinet that blends veteran experience, young leaders, professionals, and loyal strategists. This marks the first non-DMK/non-AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu in nearly six decades.
